Read the given passage and answer questions ( 1 to 5) :

On the surface, the conquest of the Aztec empire by Herman Cortes is one of the most amazing military accomplishments in history. With a small fighting force numbering in the hundreds, Cortes led the Spanish explorers into victory against an Aztec population that many believe topped 21 million. In light of such a seemingly impossible victory, the obvious question is: how did a small group of foreign fighters manage to topple one of the world's strongest, wealthiest, and most successful military empires?
Several factors led to Cortes' success. First, the Spanish exploited animosity toward the Aztecs among rival groups and convinced thousands of locals to fight. In one account of a battle, it is recorded that at least 200,000 natives fought with Cortes. Next, the Spanish possessed superior military equipment in the form of European cannons, guns, and crossbows, leading to effective and efficient disposal of Aztec defenses. For example, Spanish cannons quickly defeated large Aztec walls that had protected the empire against big and less technically advanced armies.
Despite the Spanish advantages, the Aztecs probably could have succeeded in defending their capital city of Tenochtitlan had they leveraged their incredible population base to increase their army's size and ensured that no rogue cities would ally with Cortes. In order to accomplish this later goal, Aztec leader Motecuhzoma needed to send envoys to neighboring cities telling their inhabitants about the horrors of Spanish conquest and the inevitability of Spanish betrayal.
In addition, the Aztecs should have exploited the fact that the battle was taking place on their territory. No reason existed for the Aztecs to consent to a conventional battle, which heavily favored the Spanish. Motecuhzoma's forces should have thought outside the box and allowed Cortes into the city, only to subsequently use hundreds of thousands of fighters to prevent escape and proceed in surprise "door-to-door" combat. With this type of battle, the Aztecs would have largely thwarted Spanish technological supremacy. However, in the end, the superior weaponry of the Spanish, the pent-up resentment of Aztec rivals, the failure of Aztec diplomacy, and the lack of an unconventional Aztec war plan led to one of the most surprising military outcomes in the past one thousand years.

Q1)-Which of the following best characterizes the main point the author is trying to convey in the passage?

(A) 10% profit
(B) 10% loss
(C) 12.5% profit
(D) 12.5% loss
(E) None of these

Answers:
1-Ans : (C)
2-Ans : (D)
3-Ans. (C)
4-Ans. (D)
5-Ans. (A)
Let CP = Rs 100, P = 30.05%
∴ S.P. = Rs 130.05
Discounts = 10%, 15%, 15%
∴ M.P. = 130.05 × 100/90 x 100/85 x 100/85 = Rs 200
If discounts are 10% and 15% only
∴ S.P. = M.P. × {(100-d1)/100} x {(100-d2)/100}
=> 200 x 90/100 x 85/100 = Rs. 153
So, Profit = 53%
6-Solution :(B) {192/(x-16)} – 192/x = 2
=> Speed of the fast Train = 48 kmph
7-Solution : (C) Let the speeds of fast plane and slow planes be x and y m/sec respectively D = s × t
If they move in opposite direction
15 (x + y) = 1200 ⇒ x + y = 80 m/sec … (i)
If they move in same direction, relative speed = x – y m/sec
Time = 60 i.e. 4 times
∴ Speed is (1/4)th x – y = 20 m/sec … (ii)
Solving (i) and (ii),
y = 50 m/sec = 0.05 km/sec
8-Ans. (D)
You are starting from Mumbai at 12:00 noon, so you’ll meet first train which is going to reach Mumbai at 12:30pm or which started from Pune at 8:00am. Also you’ll reach Pune at 4:30pm, so you’ll meet the last train which leaves Pune at 4:00pm.
So in all, you are going to meet all trains which start from Pune at 8:00am, 9:00am, 10:00am, 11:00am, 12:00noon, 1:00pm, 2:00pm, 3:00pm and 4:00pm i.e. 9 in total. option d.
9-Solution : (A)
(D/40) – (D/50) = 1 ⇒ D = 200 kms
10-Solution : (A) C.P. of 70 kg rice = Rs 175
S.P. = 2.75 × 70 =385/2
P =385/2 – 175 =35/2
∴ P% = 35/2 ×1/175 × 100 = 10 %

3. X gain Rs. 3150
4. X loses Rs. 3150
5. None of these

Answers:
1-Solution : The answer cannot be determined from the information given.
2-Solution : None of the above
Total cost = Rs. [1*1000 + (100 – 2)% of 1 * 4000]
=> Rs. (1000 + 0.98 x 4000)
=> Rs. (1000 + 3920) => Rs. 4920.
3-Solution : 12%
4/9 candies at 27% profit and rest candies (i.e. 5/9) candies at CP (means profit = 0)
Overall Profit% = (4/9 * 27) + (5/9 * 0)
Overall profit% = 12%
4-Solution : 3%
Let, he sells remaining pencils at x% loss.
(1/3 * 36) – (2/3 * x) = 10
12 – 2x/3 = 10
X = 3
5-Solution : 3300
Number of valid votes = 80% of 7500 = 6000.
Valid votes polled by other candidate = 55% of 6000= [(55/100) x 6000] = 3300.
6-Solution : 8 (15/17)%
Total sales tax paid = 7% of Rs. 400 + 9% of Rs. 6400
Total sales tax paid = Rs. 604
Total cost of the items = Rs. (400 + 6400) = Rs. 6800.

Required Percentage = 604/6800 * 100 = 8 (15/17)%
7-Solution : 33.33%
Water in original mixture = 1/4
Water in final mixture = 1/2
Use Allegation :
1/4                                            1
                       1/2

1/2                                           1/4 ———–>   Ratio becomes = 2:1
Quantity replaced = 1/3 or 33.33%

OR

Let total mixture be = 40 lts
Milk = ¾ * 40 = 30 lts
Water = 10 lts
Let, replaced amount be = x
Milk:Water in original quantity = 3:1 ——–> Milk replaced = 3x/4
Milk becomes in final mixture = 30 – 3x/4 (this is equal to ½ of 40 lts)
SO,
30 – 3x/4 = 20 ——-> x = 40/3
Total replaced quantity = 40/3 lts
Percentage removed = (40/3) / 40 * 100 = 33.33%
8-Solution : 150 gms
In 50 gms, Gold and Silver in the ratio = 80:20
So, Gold = 40 gms
Silver = 10 gms
Let quantity of gold be mixed up be “x”
SO,
(40+x)/(50+x) = 95/100
X = 150 gms
9-Solution : X gain Rs. 3150
Rs. 150000 x 105/100 = 157500 (X sells to Y at a profit of 5%)
Rs. 157500 x 98/100 = 154350 (Y resells to X at a loss of 2%)

X gains = Rs. 157500 – 154350 = Rs. 3150
